The TH-110 Haze Meter is a precision optical instrument designed to measure haze and total luminous transmittance of transparent and translucent materials, including glass, plastic sheet, film, packaging, display screens, and protective covers. It is built to give quality control and R&D teams a fast, repeatable, and standards-compliant way to evaluate optical clarity during production, incoming inspection, and product development.
Total luminous transmittance is the ratio of the total amount of light that passes through a sample to the amount of light that was originally incident on it, expressed as a percentage. A higher transmittance value means more light passes through the material, which generally corresponds to a brighter, clearer appearance. Transmittance is affected by surface reflection, absorption within the material, and scattering caused by internal defects or surface texture.
Haze refers to the percentage of transmitted light that is scattered from the incident beam by more than a specified angle, giving the material a cloudy, milky, or hazy appearance rather than a perfectly clear one. Haze is typically caused by surface roughness, embedded particles, crystallinity in plastics, or micro-scratches. Even a material with high total transmittance can have a high haze value if a large proportion of the transmitted light is scattered rather than passing straight through — this is why haze and transmittance are usually reported together rather than in isolation.
For manufacturers of glass, film, packaging, optical components, and display covers, haze and transmittance directly affect how a product looks and performs. Mobile Device Cover
Tempered glass and cover lenses for smartphones and tablets must maintain high transmittance and low haze so that the display beneath remains bright, sharp and free of visible cloudiness. Phone Film
